Abstract
Media education is an essential segment of modern education systems and a key prerequisite for the development of democratic culture and critical thinking among young generations. In conditions of intensive digitization and heightened exposure to information and misinformation, the integration of media literacy into the teaching process is necessary. This paper analyzes the connection between media education and the development of democratic culture in the modern educational context, with an emphasis on pedagogical models, teachers’ roles, and comparative European experiences. The goal is to determine how the integration of media literacy in the teaching process contributes to the development of critical thinking and democratic competencies among students. Methodologically, the paper is based on a qualitative analysis of relevant theoretical literature, European strategic documents, and a comparative review of educational policies and practices in several European countries. The analysis includes critical media pedagogy, interdisciplinary, and integrative approaches as dominant models in contemporary media education. Particular attention is paid to the teacher as the bearer of the educational transformation – mediator, facilitator, and creator of a democratic school climate. The importance of professional competencies, continuous professional training, and institutional support for the effective implementation of media education is emphasized. Through a comparative analysis of European policies and practices, the paper identifies common trends, good practices, and challenges in the integration of media literacy into curricula. The results indicate that the systemic implementation of media education contributes to the development of a democratic culture by encouraging analysis, tolerance, active citizen participation, and resistance to misinformation. The role of the teacher turns out to be crucial in the process of transforming the school environment into a democratically oriented space for dialogue and critical reflection.
